One of the best parts of my job is being allowed to use my ipod while I shelve, and, to fill the time, I’ve listened to a great many podcasts. One of my favorites ever is Radiolab, which is hilarious and investigative and sciencey and takes time to piece out complicated ideas in an expansive variety of topics. Today I listened to their podcast on sperm (a whole hour’s worth of sperm!), and learned about: duck genitals.
Apparently not all male birds have penises, but most ducks do. Some are over a foot long! And corkscrewed! This has naturally made some scientists wonder: how does the duck vagina compare?
Well.
These female ducks have evolved to not only be able to handle the odd shapes and sizes of the phalluses, but also to protect their eggs from getting fertilized by any odd sperm. The duck vagina has multiple canals going in different directions which can be opened and closed (depending on how much they want the male duck to be their baby-daddy) by clenching certain muscles. Fake-out vaginal canals.
Fascinating.
(there’s a better-explaining article here, but I think everyone should hear the magic of Radiolab.)
